Wales, the Welsh government must be working towards a HS railway line joining the south and the north of our nation.

What would be the point of that? Who needs to travel at speed from Cardiff to Conwy? Or any other of the north coast towns. New track would be at a cost to our wonderful landscape.

HS rail is about shaping the future. Building the opportunities for future generations. The landscapes and countryside in Cymru have been altered and shaped by hundreds of generations before us and, I believe, that a HS railway line has so much to offer as we build the infrastructure on our journey towards becoming an independent nation.

If the Welsh govt gets power over the railways we'll have them running at 20 mph.

You may well be right that we in Wales have not had our fair share of investment in our railways. Some facts based on our population might be more persuasive than this general “poor us” approach. But one thing is certain that we should resist further devolved responsibilities to this Welsh government when they have demonstrated such incompetence in areas such devolved as health and education. The disaster that is the M4 between Newport and Cardiff is because they have failed to support an improved road infrastructure - railways are not the problem there. Though I agree that Chepstow through to Cardiff is poorly served. But we have a very challenging geography in Wales and it is not clear to me (or to the writer it seems) exactly how railway enhancement will make any significant difference to how we choose to get around. And it would make no significant difference to the misguided and self harming net Zero target which Westminster are continuing to persue.
